Why do we shiver when we feel cold?

Our body does a lot of involuntary things without our knowledge, like digestion in our stomach right now, keeping our heart beating and a thousand more things which you are now becoming aware of....So let's today concentrate on one of the involuntary functions, that is Shivering. So. "Why do we shiver when we feel cold? Let's explore!

Well, the brain is always monitoring your body temperature to keep it at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the normal temperature of a healthy person. When your body gets cold, the part of  the brain called the hypothalamus tries to raise your body temperature by ordering your muscles to start shaking. This shaking of the muscles is what we call shivering.

As we feel cold, our blood vessels starts narrowing in a process called Vasoconstriction. This causes less blood to reach your extremities therefore less heat to leave the body. After-all we need to keep on producing heat to survive

Meanwhile tiny muscles in your skin connected to your hair contract causing the skin to distort therefore resulting in goosebumps.

Shivering generates the heat needed to warm up our bodies. Sometimes, shivering alone does not produce enough heat to keep you warm. It is a good idea then to jump up and down, and flap your arms around. The extra movement will generate more heat that will keep you warm.
