When and why was Rome founded?

Rome has been a sprawling, cosmopolitan city with nearly 3,000 years of globally influential art, architecture and culture on display. It was truly an amazing city. Well, why and when was it found? Let's explore in today's post!

Around 1000 BC, a wave of invaders crossed the Alps, and occupied parts of Central and Southern Italy. Coming from Indo-European stock, they were made up of four tribes- the Samnites, Sabines, Umbrians and Latins.

The Latins settled in Central Italy. By 753 BC, they decided to build a city and choose a site on the banks of river Tiber. They faced constant threat from their neighbours, the Etruscans, who were settled on the north of the Tiber. The Latins realised that their enemies could cross the river at only one point and that was the Palatine Hill overlooked this point.

Hence, they choose that as the site for new city that came to be known as Rome. Several Kings ruled ROme until it became a republic in 509 BC.

According to legend, Ancient Rome was founded by the two brothers, and demi-gods, Romulus and Remus, on 21 April 753. The legend claims that, in an argument over who would rule the city Romulus killed Remus and named the city after himself.

So, this is the story behind it!
