What happens if Earth's magnetic poles reverse?
Even if these happen, they probably won't happen in our life time! Why does this reversal happen at first place?
The reason the Earth even has a magnetic field lines is due to its molten Iron in the outer core and the motion of the outer core along with some complicated physics, generates a magnetic field through some effect known as "Dynamo Effect". Its not properly and completely proved though, but well, that's why we have got some Scientists, and they are doing some research on it.
Our Earth has humans, animals, plant life, and it also has magnetic fields which protects us from the radiations from space and coronal mass ejections from the SUN. Our earth has this magnetic fields from 4 million years.
Imagine our Earth as a giant magnet where magnetic field lines go from magnetic north to south, so if your body is pointing north, the magnetic compass would point north too but this hasn't always been that way. 800,000 years ago even if your body pointed north, the compass would point south, in other words magnetic field lines was reverse! But how?
In the past 20 million years or so, the Earth's magnetic field reversed about once every 200,000 - 300,000 years. But it has been about 780,000 years since the last time the field was reversed....Its not an instantaneous change though...it happens in 100's and 1000's of years. According to studies, Earth's magnetic field is weakening 10 times faster than previously thought! About 5% per decade. It means the process has started long back...But nothing to panic!
We all are not going to die because of this. There is no past evidence of extinction due to its reversal. Even if magnetic field continues to weaken, we have atmosphere to protect us. The main problem is power grids and communication systems being at risk and even any animal which use magnetic fields to navigate may face some difficulty for some time.
